About Us

Hello! I'm Emma, and I'm the founder of Purple Dog Arts. We are proud to offer vocal musicianship training to singers of all levels, from complete beginners to professionals. Our person-centred, holistic approach means that all sessions are tailored to you and your voice, recognising that each singer is completely unique. Together, we will use a variety of training techniques tailored to unlock your individual potential. So whether you want to learn a specific song to impress a special someone, perfect your karaoke classics, work your way up the ranks of graded examinations, or just develop safe and effective vocal technique, we're the school for you!

Our Holistic Approach

We recognise that all singers are individuals. Unlike other musical instruments, our voice is a part of us - with us from the moment we are born for our whole life. It is influenced heavily by the people we are and the choices we make as we navigate our day to day lives. Therefore, we know the importance of treating it with individual care.

As no two lives are the same, neither will two voices be the same, and so we promise to never treat your voice like it isn't the unique instrument that it is! Our sessions will explore a range of techniques, finding which ones work for you (and which ones don't!) so that you are able to unlock your vocal potential.

Our students make great progress when they understand not only their voices, but how their lifestyle, environment, habits and health can impact their vocal musicianship and training. Learning with Purple Dog not only unlocks a great understanding of the voice, but of yourself too!

FAQs

Do I need any previous experience to sing?

No, we teach everyone from complete beginners to professionals.

Is there an age limit to lessons?

One-to-one lessons are currently available for students aged 11 and up.

What sort of repertoire can I learn?

We pride ourselves in being able to turn our hand to most genres and will do our best to accommodate your choice of repertoire, whilst pushing you to experiment with different styles that may suit your voice. Our experience is in classical, opera and musical theatre, but these skills are transferable to a wide variety of specialisms and genres.

How much do lessons cost?

See our Prices tab for more information!

Where do lessons take place?

We currently teach in studio locations across Newport & the surrounding area. We can also attend your home if you have a good quality keyboard or piano to teach from (some locations may incur an additional travel fee).

Do you teach to exam grade syllabi?

We can teach exam syllabi and are able to enter students for exams through the ABRSM and Trinity exam boards (other boards may be considered upon request). Whilst the examination pathway is one that many of our students do choose to take, taking and passing examinations is not an essential part of taking lessons with us.

Do you teach other instruments?

Our specialism is voice, but we are able to offer sessions that cover beginner piano/keyboard skills and music theory, aural and sight singing sessions as we believe these skills are helpful to singers of all levels.
